Farm Safety in Focus This Week
Farm safety is taking the front seat this week with National Farm Safety and Health Week. The awareness week comes as the fall harvest season ramps up, making it a great reminder to ensure the safety of daily operations.
We spoke to Scott Heiberger with the National Farm Medicine Center (NFMC) to discuss the importance of farm safety and how to approach these crucial conversations. The Center works to keep farm safety top-of-mind year-round. However, this week provides an opportunity to remind farmers and drivers to be careful. NFMC also focuses on child-related safety and the protection of young farm workers.
Agriculture was No. 1 in occupational fatalities for youth aged 17 and under from 2011-2020, according to the National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. Additionally, 60% of youth are not working when they are injured in agriculture.
