Trader PhD Survey Shows Lower Corn, Soybean, Wheat Acres from March Report

U.S. farmers planted 95.1 million acres of corn this season, according to a Trader PhD listener survey in June. Acres are estimated 0.8 percent lower than the initial March estimate of 95.8 million.

Soybean acreage came in 0.2 percent lower than the March survey at 83.1 million.

“The lower shift in corn and soybean acreage is not entirely surprising, given rain delays producers experienced in the Eastern Corn Belt this spring,” said Head of Market Content Dawson Schmitt. “We saw some acres leave states like Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio due to prevent plant acres. But other respondents in Iowa still ended up with intended acres after replanting some areas.”

All wheat acreage was estimated at 45.2 million acres, down 0.8 percent from March.

Combined principal crop acreage for corn, soybeans, and wheat is expected to be 223.4 million acres.

Trader PhD surveys cotton producers, but did not receive enough responses to formulate a reliable estimate.

USDA ACREAGE ESTIMATES

On Monday, the USDA released its Quarterly Grain Stocks and Acreage reports. According to the USDA, U.S. farmers planted 95.2 million acres of corn this spring, compared to the March planting intentions report forecast of 95.3 million.

The June estimate was up five percent or 4.61 million acres from last year’s final number of 90.6 million and represents the third-highest planted acreage since 1944, according to the USDA.

The soybean planted area this year is at 83.4 million acres, slightly lower than the March estimate of 83.5 million. Total acreage is expected to be down four percent from last year.

All wheat acres are estimated at 45.5 million acres, up about 100,000 acres from the March forecast but down one percent from the 46.1 million estimated in 2024.

All cotton acres were estimated at 10.12 million, up from the March estimate of 9.9 million. Total acreage is expected to be down 10 percent from 2024 and the lowest plantings since 2016.
